The Shoah: A Polyphony of Voices

Published at:12.12.2018

MOCAK published the book The Shoah: A Polyphony of Voices which discusses the issues connected with depicting and interpreting the Holocaust. The Museum invited 100 contributors: philosophers, historians, literary scholars, psychiatrists, artist, curators and writers to answer questions that seem crucial today – about memory and ways of describing the Holocaust, and the limits of artistic freedom when talking about these events. In other words, this book is not so much about the Shoah itself, but rather about the responsibility for it, as viewed by leading Polish and international intellectuals.

The publication was inspired by the exhibition Poland – Israel – Germany: The Experience of Auschwitz, presented at MOCAK in 2015. The exhibition sparked controversy, and some works were actually protested against. Such reactions show how much we still need to come to terms with the Holocaust and how ‘forbidden’ this topic really is. Working to change this status quo, by way of exhibitions, publishing and research, is an important element of MOCAK’s programme.
