Shinji Ogawa
(b. 1959)
The visual catalog of possible historical manipulation: dividing figures, doubling buildings, superimposing one text on another, filling in ruins, creating new cities on the pattern of old ones, separating documents into layers, sketching in connections between pictures that are not connected with each other. At times the procedure is clearly visible, the assault on „history” is recognizable, and at other times the image seems plausible and consistent. The effect is amplified by the perfectionist employment of classical painting and drawing techniques.
