Video, performance, photography. The artist has given up her surname, taking up as her artistic alias the name of a cigarette popular in Austria – Smart Export. Her art has arisen from body art. The actions of VALIE EXPORT often take place in public space and have a radical character. The artist raises feminist and social issues and she analyses the influence of the media on the shaping of the image and role of the woman in today’s world. Important aspects of her works are the presentation of male domination, contradictions in the perception and understanding of social gender and also violence against women. The artist often reverses the stereotypical male – female roles.
