Reza Aramesh
(b. 1970) Sculpture, photography, video, performance. The artist has been inspired by the Baroque Spanish art. He uses traditional techniques and iconographic motifs typical of religious painting. He intersperses his works with mass media footage, mainly of armed conflicts. The tortured prisoners and anonymous civilians bring to mind the figures of saints familiar from paintings. Employing visual codes shaped by (art) history, the artist deconstructs the iconography of war, and makes the viewer observe the tensions and links between the images present in each of his works.
