reCYCLING - Painting Bicycles Together to Ring in the Vacation
Published at:25.06.2012
On Saturday, 30 June at 12:00 noon, MOCAK invites the residents of Krakow to take part in the reCYCLING socio-artistic project, during which we will be painting our bicycles together to prepare them for summer.
During the event, participants can:
- creatively repaint their bicycles, thus changing the look of the city,
- use specially-prepared stencils for their own bikes,
- bring their own stencils, or make them on site,
- turn their thoughts to Krakow’s air pollution,
- see a presentation on the bicycle as a facet of culture.
This MOCAK-initiated event is interdisciplinary. Its aim is to make Krakow’s inhabitants cognizant of the link between visual art and a city’s aesthetics. The project also addresses such issues as the environment, physical fitness, and economic status. reCYCLING was born from the museum’s desire to get involved in Krakow’s local community, and in the quality of life of its inhabitants.
We want these workshops to make the vehicles of people who care about visual culture stand out more in the fabric of the city (and by extension, the people themselves). The bicycle is one of the least expensive modes of transport. This is one reason why students, artists, and people involved in culture often use it. An old, colorfully painted bicycle is a symbol of a creative life.
We have invited several dozen artists to join the project, and to design special stencils. These will be available to use on bicycles, thus symbolically signifying that there is a place for art in our daily lives.
One of MOCAK’s programs is the What Is Art for? project. We invite various social groups to reflect upon what art means to them. The reCYCLING project asks: What can artists and institutions like MOCAK bring to our everyday lives?
This action accompanies the international Sport in Art exhibition, which will be found in the museum until the end of September. This exhibition problematizes the manner in which visual artists relate to human activity involving competition and physical fitness. The event’s participants will receive complementary tickets to see over forty works by artists from more than a dozen countries, depicting the beauty, joy, and hardships of sports.
