The title makes reference to a Greek myth, the tragic story of the nymph Echo, who has been deprived of her own voice, and her unhappy love for Narcissus. Despite its apparently serene atmosphere, the picture contains some signs of disaster, such as the grey of the storm clouds or the tree tops protruding from the surface of the water. The work betrays a fascination in open spaces, a desire for freedom and nature freed from man’s harness.
