God the Monkey and the People

Artist: Trevor Gould
Technique: installation
Measurement: 275 × 365 cm
Date: 1992

The artist was born and grew up in the Republic of South Africa, which explains the prominence of the ethnic and cultural context characteristic of this country. Colonialism reduced the indigenous population to the level of animals, hence the recurrent theme of the primate in Gould’s works. The artist places himself as equal to God and the natives, whereas those with European roots are allocated a lower status.
