Hans Weigand

(born 1954)

Painting, object, installation, collage. The artist’s works are based on his archive of images of waves, sourced mainly from old prints, aquafortes and woodcuttings by Katsushika Hokusai or Albrecht Dürer. He creates multimedia collages, juxtaposing found images with photographs of the California coast, where he lived for a number of years. He is inspired by popular culture, comics, music stars, films and works by contemporary visual artists. Weigand’s leitmotif – a huge, wild wave – can symbolise human existence, most notably, on the iconic woodcutting by Hokusai: life energy ranging from the crescendo, at the crest of the billow, to inevitable extinction, when the surging water breaks.
