Beata Stankiewicz

(br. 1973)                                                                                                                                                Painting, video. Graduated from the studio of Józef Lucjan Ząbkowski in the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (1998). Since 2005, together with her husband, she has run a noncommerical art gallery from home – mieszkanie23. Her main source of inspiration is observing the ordinary. She creates large-format representations of fragments of walls, imitating their texture using plaster and mortar. Due to the way they have been cropped and removed from their original context, the works appear abstract. Her oil compositions showing trees and intimate house interiors are also characterised by their monumentalism. Although based on a photograph, the realistic representations are a personal record of a given space, the most important factor – the intensity of light and colour. The contemplative aspect of the work is best seen in the portraits of monks and representations of cloisters and monks’ cells.
