Nikita Shalenny

(b. 1982)

Painting, drawing, photography, installation. His works concern the burning issues of his immediate surroundings, in particular the civil war in Ukraine that began in 2014, which makes normal life in the artist’s home city of Dnepropetrovsk impossible, Russia’s expansionist policy having fuelled the situation. The artist analyses the phenomena, trying to determine the consequences. He represents them through compositions based on famous paintings, such as Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes
Tulp, references to fairytales and biblical stories and historic machines and equipment. He adopts the role of a critic of politics and also of that section of society that falls for stereotypes.
