Marina Abramović
(b. 1946) Performance, video, object. The human body is the focus of the artist’s attention, both as a topic and medium of art. Abramović’s performances, although they frequently stem from personal experiences, have at all times a symbolic note. The experiments that the artist carries out on her own body visualise private conflicts and social conditioning or they can be interpreted as a political manifesto. Testing one’s physical and psychological reactions to pain, tiredness and danger becomes simultaneously a ritual that makes possible release from trauma and a spiritual catharsis.
