Krakow Town Hall

Technique: video documentation of public projection
Measurement: 11 min 56 s
Date: 1996

The artist precedes all such works by conducting social research, aiming to discover the most traumatic aspects of the life in a given city. In the Krakow projection, in which he used the video technique for the first time, Wodiczko gave voice to people having to cope with addictions, aggression in the family and intolerance. Their platform is the Clock Tower, from which the public could hear about problems that one normally tries to run away from. By combining hand movements with symbolic props, these accounts of specific people acquire a universal dimension. The intention of the artist is to evoke social sensitivity and to liberate the victim from trauma.
