The Symbolic Absurd. The rules of the game are precisely defined. Any violation of their structure renders them useless or changes them into a symbol. Maria Stangret’s work replicates the layout of the childhood game of hopscotch: a horizontal drawing on which to make the appropriate series of jumps. The reward is reaching heaven, presented as a circle. For the game to be possible, the drawing must be flat. However, the artist has made part of the game vertical, rendering it obviously impossible. „In exchange for this” she attains a symbol of spiritual ascent.
