The work is a double portrait: of an ancient Legate, or the leader of a legion of centurions, and of a contemporary street vendor. The artist depicts both men in an almost identical manner, removing any pointers – such as clothes or hairstyle – to the epoch in which they lived. He shows that man, when stripped of attributes, remains himself at all times, as a timeless being.
