untitled (colonial tiles)

Artist: Debora Hirsch
Technique: oil / canvas
Measurement: 96 × 168 cm
Date: 2016

The painting is inspired by the tiles in the Church of St Francis of Assisi in Salvador, Brasil. Tiles that in Europe are usually
employed to present ornamental or generic scenes have been used to convey the concept of memento mori, ‘remember that you have to die’. The depicted scene shows that death comes to everybody, regardless of their social or material status, and all attempts to escape are doomed to failure. The work is part of the project donotclickthru, which aims to encourage a deeper reflection on the images being viewed.
