On the Internet, the artist seeks out photographs that have a peculiar energy – in which the impact depends on a single gaze or gesture. Such compositions accumulate tension. In this work, the artist was probably fascinated by the excessively exposed ‘biological’ quality of the cardinal’s face, in contrast with the richness of his dress and the splendour of the interior of St Mary’s Basilica in Krakow.
